iPad Radiology App for Mobile Diagnosis Approved by FDA Posted: 05 Feb 2011 01:52 PM PST Incase you are from outer space and do not know, FDA stands for US Food and Drug Administration, and they’ve just approved an app that’ll work on both iPad and iPhone (and we assume iPod Touch too, since that’s generally what happens,) that last surfaced when it won the Apple Design Award for “Best iPhone Healthcare & Fitness Application” in 2008. This app, the FDA notes, “is not intended to replace full workstations and is indicated for use only when there is no access to a workstation.” The app is called “Mobile MIM” an essentially displays on a screen what you’d normally see printed on film and hung up on a light wall. When you get a broken bone, or for example when police officers want to see how many bullets you’ve swallowed by looking at an x-ray – this is the sort of thing you’ll be able to see now on your iPad, doctors. Much quicker than the alternative and apparently just as accurate. The images that’ll be able to be viewed in this app are what William Maisel, MD, MPH, the chief scientist and deputy director for science in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health says are “based on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine technology, such as positron emission tomography (PET).” The FDA evaluated this app based on measured luminance, resolution, and noise according to international guidelines and standards. After reviewing results from qualified radiologists conducting demo studies under all manner of conditions of light, all participants agreed that the app was sufficient for diagnostic image interpretation under the recommended lighting conditions.” This app, now approved, will be available sometime next week in the Apple App store in 14 languages in 34 countries. Nintendo Must Release the Wii 2 This Year Posted: 05 Feb 2011 10:30 AM PST The video game market finds itself in a rather interesting place. Its consoles are still selling exceptionally well, some of the best games released in a long time hit store shelves in 2010, and yet, consumers, pundits, and analysts are wondering when Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will be announcing new consoles. The calls for Sony and Microsoft to offer up new consoles aren't as loud as those for Nintendo. Last year, Sony released its PlayStation Move peripheral to capitalize on the wildly popular motion-gaming space. Microsoft released the Kinect to do the same. And at least for now, it's expected that those companies will be spending 2011 doubling down on those technologies with their current consoles. But Nintendo is a different case. Since the Wii's launch in 2006, the game company's platform has been performing extremely well. Nintendo says that it has sold over 34 million Wii units in the U.S. alone since the console's launch, and each of the last three years, it has sold at least 7 million Wii units. It's a feat that five years ago, few thought possible. But Nintendo's platform is slowing down. In 2010, it sold 7 million units, but the company cashed in on nearly 20 million consoles between 2008 and 2009. And there is speculation that the Wii will see even slower sales in 2011. Realizing that, the timing seems ripe for Nintendo to launch a new console. Historically, console launches jump start sales. It's why the gaming business has seen console updates around every five years after a respective device launches, and it's why speculation abounds that Nintendo will announce a new version of the Wii this year. Of course, some Nintendo fans don't see the need for their favorite game company to launch a new console. They point to the fact that the Wii is still tops in hardware sales, and it still has solid software to appeal to customers. Consoles should be replaced when they start to become obsolete, those folks reason, and the Wii is far from that. But I'd have to disagree. Yes, the Wii is still the top gaming console this generation, and I do believe that it will sell reasonably well in 2011. But the console is obsolete. And the key factor that made it so popular — motion gaming — isn't appealing as it once was. Let's take a look at the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Those platforms deliver far more graphical power than the Wii. They also have robust online gaming experiences that continue to captivate gamers each and every day. Perhaps most importantly, they have proven to be far more popular with third-party developers that welcome that extra power and capability. The Wii, with its standard-definition support and general lack of popular third-party games, looks awfully less appealing than its counterparts. And it gets even worse when one considers that the PlayStation Move promises functionality with more "hardcore" games and the Kinect delivers motion gaming without the need to hold a controller. Now, I'll admit that many of the complaints about the Wii have been swirling in gaming circles for years. But declining Wii sales and compelling motion alternatives make them more relevant than ever. The Nintendo Wii needs to be replaced with hardware that can at least match the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. And it needs to happen sooner rather than later. Relevant Entries on SlashGear

Huge Nokia exec slash incoming tips German business mag Posted: 05 Feb 2011 07:51 AM PST Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is reportedly preparing to significantly shake up the company’s top management, axing big names such as executive VP of phones Mary MacDowell and executive VP of markets Niklas Savander. According to German business magazine WirtschaftsWoche, around half of the Nokia executive board will be replaced, including executive VP of services and mobile solutions Tero Ojanperä, and chief development officer Kai Öistämö. Nokia’s plans for the near future are currently hotly argued, after Elop admitted that the company “must build, catalyse or join a competitive ecosystem” and prompted speculation it would consider platforms other than Symbian and MeeGo. On Friday, rumors circulated that Nokia might adopt Windows Phone 7 in an attempt to jump ahead in the US market; the company’s investors meeting in London, UK, this coming Friday is expected to see a significant announcement made, while SlashGear has heard that there will be a similarly important platform announcement at Mobile World Congress 2011 the following week. WirtschaftsWoche’s sources tell the magazine that Nokia has headhunters looking for execs with international software experience to rebuild the company’s structure and hopefully set them back on track in the face of Android, iOS and other platforms. If true, the restructuring could be some of the most considerable seen in Nokia’s history. We’ve reached out to Nokia for official comment, and will update when we know more. Update: Nokia has told us it “does not comment on speculation and rumor.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see for the potential fall-out on Friday February 11. HTC Flyer, Pyramid, Desire 2, Wildfire S and LG Star Tab name-checked in purported inventory leak Posted: 05 Feb 2011 03:44 AM PST Inventory leaks can be tricky things; it’s all too easy to slap a few codenamed products in a database, snap a shot or two and then call it confirmation. That said, FoneArena seems pretty confident in their unnamed inventory source which has supplied a few images apparently confirming the incoming HTC Pyramid, HTC Desire 2 and HTC Wildfire S, along with the HTC Flyer tablet and the LG Star Tab. Check out how the rumors stack up with what we’ve been hearing from the mobile grapevine after the cut. The HTC Flyer is already believed to be a lock-in for MWC 2011 in a little over a week’s time, one of what SlashGear is hearing will be two HTC slates for the Barcelona show (the other doesn’t get a mention in this particular inventory). As for the Desire 2 – which we’ve been told by other sources will actually be the HTC Desire S – that would replace the year-old Desire smartphone announced at MWC 2010. The HTC Wildfire S would, similarly, be a replacement to the existing entry-level Android Wildfire. As for the LG Star Tab, that certainly sounds like a tablet but it’s not clear how – or if – it will differ from the LG Optimus Tab (aka the European version of the LG G-Tablet) which the company has already confirmed will be officially launched at the show. It’s possible that it could be an early codename; the Optimus 2X launched in Korea as the LG Star, for example. It’s the HTC Pyramid reference that has us uncertain, though; the dual-core smartphone was only leaked on Thursday last week and, from what SlashGear sources have been telling us, won’t be making its official debut at Mobile World Congress. Instead we’re expecting it around the middle of the year. So, over-enthusiastic database management or something else: we’ll find out at MWC very shortly. Relevant Entries on SlashGear
