Yesterday, two hit and runs in the city left one disabled grandmother dead and one Brooklyn girl in the ICU with a punctured lung. Around 4 a.m., 58-year-old Ilia Lopez was struck by a livery cab on E. 121st St. at Second Avenue. The driver reportedly sped off with Lopez still on the hood of the car; she didn't fall off until he hit E. 120th Street and First avenue. She was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, but the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers wants to make sure nobody gets a bad view of livery drivers because of this. [ MORE] | For a third year in a row, NY State Assemblywoman Grace Meng (D-Queens) held a rally to make the Lunar New Year a school holiday in NYC and other parts of NY State. According to the Daily News, "Meng has introduced bills calling for schools to observe the holiday in all cities in the state with more than 1 million residents, at least 7.5% of them Asian. She has also written to the mayor's office and the city Education Department." ... [ MORE ] | | Sorry, commenters, but all the "Bloomturd" and "Bloomtard" nicknames are getting a bit played out. A magnificent new exhibit comprised of corpses believed to be political prisoners from China (our Benevolent Flowering Pimp and Protector) are on display for your amusement in Lower Manhattan. MARVEL at human rights victims displayed as tourist attractions! LAUGH at a bifurcated corpse high-five himself! IGNORE the hypocrisy that our vast debt with China engenders! It's fun for the whole dumb family, and this new version of the show has an added feature: an interactive exhibit that takes place completely in the dark—which, oddly enough, is where these once-living humans probably died at the hands of government executioners. ... [ MORE ] | | As part of his AFC Championship Jets/Steelers bet with Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, Mayor Bloomberg agreed to hoist the Steelers' "Terrible Towel" on a NYC landmark, and assemble care packages for soldiers who are back from overseas, while wearing a Steelers jersey. And now six firefighters have gotten second-degree burns on the back of their hands. Since the problem emerged the FDNY has been scrambling to get the gloves out of circulation (not to mention the $850,000 they spent on them). Oh, and the Glove Corp.? It closed on January 31....
