Yesterday, a video of a woman being attacked on a Park Slope street was made public, showing how her screams attracted the attention of neighbors, which then scared the man into releasing her. The attack occurred on March 20th, and residents say that the police didn't seem very interested in investigating the crime: One told WCBS 2, “Basically there’s a sense that the police aren’t going to do anything. And that encourages this kind of crime." [ MORE] | Based on the last time we wrote about extremist mustache enthusiast Pastor Terry Jones, you probably already have an idea how we feel about his Koran-burning shenanigans and his arrogant, unnecessarily provocative nature. Many people blamed the media, and us, for giving a radical, unsubstantial rabble-rouser any attention in the first place. So why are we writing about him again? Because even the KKK thinks he's "ignorant," "despicable" and "Un-American." And also because his gun accidentally fired as he was leaving a TV studio last night, and that's kind of funny.... [ MORE ] | | Early yesterday morning, a Bronx man was shot 10 times by police when he refused to drop his realistic-looking pellet gun after a fight broke out outside a nightclub. Incredibly, none of the bullets hit any of Mamadou Balde's vital organs, and he is in critical but stable condition at Lincoln Hospital. Friends call Balde a "wannabe Blood," his family calls him a "gang member wannabe," but the gentlemen and good ladies at the Post just call him a "gangsta idiot."... As if that wasn't infuriating enough, the officer who wrote him the ticket offered an apologetic explanation—as they tend to do—for giving Guirgis the ticket. As in all things, the blame can be placed on Robin Williams. Just in case Old Dogs wasn't enough of an outrage, Guirgis gives us this: ... [ MORE ] | | The family of the Bronx community leader who was fatally run over by a city bus last year while swerving to avoid a car door is suing the city for not putting in a bike lane. You may recall, with enormous sadness, that Megan Charlop, 57, was run over by the city bus last March while biking to Bronx schools to finalize a community gardening project. She had tragically crossed paths with driver Min Kyung Kwan, who popped open the door of his parked car without looking. It's unclear whether the door clipped her or if she swerved to avoid it, but the result was the death of a devoted foster mom, wife, and community activist.... [ MORE ] | | There's nothing that necessitates a drink more than a trip to Penn Station, but the owners of bars in and around the transit hub say homeless people are ruining business with their panhandling. During a Midtown South Precinct Community Council meeting Thursday night, business owners called for a crackdown on beggars, some of which come up with elaborate, long running schemes to garner sympathy. Then again, the homeless people do provide a nice scapegoat; without them, customers will have to face the fact that they're just drinking in the Penn Station T.G.I. Friday's. ... [ MORE ] | | It was bad enough when Pennsylvania got its first self-serve wine kiosks last year, with thousands of bottles available at the click of a button in grocery stores. But now, they've gone too far: the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board is on the verge of approving a pilot program to sell hard liquor out of those wine vending kiosks. Why is the sixth borough at the cutting edge of alco-vending machine technology???... [ MORE ] | | |
