Artwork Feature #5: Alexander Otto - Solstice

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 10:31 AM PST

This is part of our new series of posts. Here we feature a selected piece of art and have a little chat with the designer who made it. They give us a bit of background information and details about how the work was conceptualized and created.

This week's pick is from german graphic designer Alexander Otto, better known under his moniker "Diftnorm". Mr. Otto sat down exclusively for Abduzeedo and wrote about the background of the image exclusively. Enjoy.

Solstice

Artwork Feature #5: Alexander Otto - Solstice

About Solstice

This issue was curated by KDU partner, Josh Vanover, KDU Core member, Victor Antonio and KDU Founder, David Gensler. Containing over one hundred original images, it represents our continuing effort to crate the future while resisting the Digital Haze and Hype.

Alexander Otto about his "Solstice":

After I've gotten the briefing from Josh Vanover and Victor Antonio my mind was blown away. The final magazine contains over one hundred original images produced by top KDU members. So was I pretty aware that my illustration needs to fit into the style of the old issues of Solstice - Also I wanted to develope a new rough dark style and show a range of good quality technical skills in my piece.

I've put together some images to visualise the process of the illustration. First I've started with a black hi-res PSB and begun to create the background. I like to play with textures and stocks in the very early beginnig and try to make a nice composition with them - have a look at the only background version for what I was up.

Afterwards I started to add more colors and begun with the dark mountain which contains the KDU Logo and a big box on the top. I developed the look with the help of a few stocks and matte painting technics.

I than concentrated more on the foreground, I was sure I would need something that matches more the concept and the composition itselfs. I used different stocks and textures to create than the painfull looking girl in the front.

In the end I am always going to add tons of adjustment layers, overwork and add details to the main parts on the illustration - in my mind the best part in the process of creating an illustration - and add some more textures.

The Chapman Graduate School of Business

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:41 AM PST

This building at the University of Florida was created for the Chapman Graduate School of Business, is a multi-use project which includes faculty, offices, auditoriums, conference rooms and also two large courtyards open to the integration of students.

<!--break-->

Project by KPF Architects, the identity of the Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Graduate School of Business at Florida International University in Miami merges a strong link to the Americas with the image and actuality of a modern facility. The low-rise, courtyard design opens toward the existing Business Administration building with a strong diagonal pathway that allows east-west breezes to filter through the new complex.

Oriented to optimize and capture the prevailing winds from the west, the buildings are sliced at their corners to temper and ventilate the landscaped interior courtyards. In conjunction with water basins and dense plantings, the breezeways ensure that the courtyards are comfortable, even during the hottest hours of the day. By night, the open corners reveal the illuminated courtyards to the surrounding campus, creating a welcoming and dynamic environment for the many students who attend evening classes at the school.

The Colorful and Expressive Art of Gianluca Mattia

Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:30 AM PST

I know we already said this many times, but it's important to repeat that is really nice to receive emails from readers and artists suggesting things for us to write about. When I opened the link to Gianluca's website I got instantly impressed by the colors and style I saw. He sent us an email suggesting a couple images to our Daily Inspiration series, but his characters are so stunning that we decided to write a complete article about his work.

Gianluca Mattia has a really cool style, full of colors, beauty and personality. His characters are vivid, erotic, surreal and sometimes innocent, they seem to tell us a whole history in their parallel universe, simply great. I recommend you check out Gianluca's website for further artworks, it is really worth it. ;)

Gianluca is an Italian graphic Artist and illustrator who was born in Bari, Italy. Qualified in the Institute of Art with qualifications of Art's Master and architect's designer and interior decoration. After his arts studies, Mattia focused in digital illustration. His illustrations are vivid, erotic, subversive, part-emo, part-punk, between realistic and surreal. They operate in some of the same realms of beauty, utilizing details like tattoos, blood, tears, piercings, band-aids, open wounds, skulls, odd creatures, hot rods and scars.

"My style is a mix of various things, I call it a shake of genres. I always loved erotic contemporary illustrators like Luis Royo and Milo Manara, etc... they way they express themselves trough provocative female figures. I also like manga, american comics, low brow art, pop surrealism, etc. All this is poured on my trait, in my style, that is a natural consequence of the things that I appreciate. Also I try to give
my vision of things, of colors, shapes and contents. I like to use metaphors, the irony and put them to surreal themes, vivid, erotic, social, sad and sometimes happy"
