IT'S THE ATTACK OF THE TWO WHEELED MONSTERS! As you surely know, an impassioned war debate about bicycles has consumed New Yorkers over the past couple of years. Are they taking over NYC with their ubiquitous lanes and their reckless behavior? Or are they the key to alleviating traffic and turning New York into a sustainable, 21st century city? The incredible cycling boom over the past decade has certainly polarized New Yorkers, as drivers, pedestrians and cyclists cope with the dramatic changes brought by the DOT to our traffic-clogged streets. And in the heart of the debate you'll find Paul Steely White, the Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives, a group that has worked closely with the DOT to improve the cycling, pedestrian, and mass transit infrastructure. Yesterday we caught up with White, who had just finished a meeting with City Councilman Eric Ulrich, who plans to introduce legislation requiring all adult cyclists to get licenses and registration. Let us explain: last night's audition episode—featuring Bronx native/new Idol host J.Lo!— included a segment about 16-year-old Bronx-native Travis Orlando, a boy who apparently has had a rough childhood that included time in shelter. He describes his formative years as "tough," surrounded by "gangs, drugs, violence," and continues later to boast his neighborhood has "robberies, killings, anything you can possibly imagine goes on here." Enter an angry Diaz!... To recap: a video emerged recently of a dog hunting rats for sport in Washington Square Park, killing nearly 15 in one night. But is that legal, even if the city does have a rat problem?... [ MORE ] | | An idiotic survey by Travel & Leisure claims that New York City is the #2 rudest city in America, second only to Los Angeles. That LA is considered numero uno in incivility makes sense—there are countless self-serving jackasses over there—but anybody who's ever visited NYC know the old stereotype of the boorish, inconsiderate New Yorker is just a canard perpetuated by those Hollywood scumbags. Stop and ask a New Yorker for directions and others will immediately gather, competing to guide you. Fall onto the subway tracks and New Yorkers will risk their lives to save you. Hell, even our bank robbers are polite! So how did this stupid survey rank us so high on the rude list? Oh, wait it didn't—it's just the schmuck who wrote the dumbass Travel & Leisure article misrepresenting the survey. ... Well, meet Ryan Burke, a hero to anyone who's ever dreamed of sticking it to the Man in a truly vile way. Burke's going up the river (for 15 days, served on weekends) for his deeds, but he gave a New Jersey police officer a mouthful he'll never forget.... Giuliani said, "I will take a look at 2012. It’s really a question of, can I play a useful role? Would I have a chance of getting the nomination? Those are things that I’ll have to evaluate as the year goes along."... A number of his associates attended his sentencing and offering vocal support for their friend, along the lines of "Hold your head up, son" and "yo, yo, yo." Afterwards, as Guice was taken away, his pals posed for photogs in the court hallway before being ushered out of the building. ... [ MORE ] | | Do you sleep with your pet? Do you ever kiss your pet, or let it lick your face? If so, you may want to reconsider allowing such behavior in the future, since you are probably well on your way to contracting the plague. According to a new study to be published in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Emerging Infectious Diseases monthly issue (Teen Beat for epidemiologists), you greatly increase the chance of bringing diseases such as parasites, staph infection, and meningitis into your system by sleeping with your beloved pet....
